Imitation in Split-Brain Monkeys

چکیده

Three experienced split-brain monkeys were taught a visual pattern discrimination in one eye hemisphere. After several hundred over-learning trials, the opposite untrained eye hemisphere was allowed to observe 40 perfect trials. Subsequently, ten test trial,s in which every response was reinforced were delivered exclusively to the untrained hemisphere. Two monkeys performed perfectly while another required 40 additional observation trials before a perfect score was realized. The results are consistent with the view that errors during acquisition training need not be a necessary condition for visual discrimination learning and suggest that learning through observation may be more efficient than trial and error learning in some situations.

نورون های آینه ای و نقش آن درتقلید و نظریه ی ذهن در کودکان طیف اتیسم

Recent studies have reported the discovery of a group of neurons in the motor cortex of the brain's gray. These neurons are called mirror neurons. Rizzolatti and colleagues in 1990s discovered the first mirror neuron system in monkeys in the University of Parma. Mirror neurons in brain are responsible for understanding the actions and intentions of others. The mirror neuron system has an import...

Hemispherectomy vs commissurotomy in the monkey: one hemisphere can be better than two.

Split-brain cats using a single hemisphere show impaired performance on a variety of behavioral tasks. This has been attributed to a loss of cortical mass action. To test this proposal in primates, performance on a nested match-to-sample task was compared in split-brain, hemispherectomized, and normal monkeys. As expected, split-brain monkeys using a single hemisphere performed worse than norma...

Cross-cuing mechanisms and ipsilateral eye-hand control in split-brain monkeys.

It was proposed that split-brain monkeys are able to perform ipsilateral eyehand response because the seeing hemisphere can cross-cue the blind hemisphere, which is in major motor control of the arm, by orienting toward a point in space and, thereby, allow for the bilateral registration of head, neck, and eye position. In the present study, accuracy of ipsilateral eye-hand response was measured...

Dynamic circuitry for updating spatial representations. III. From neurons to behavior.

Each time the eyes move, the visual system must adjust internal representations to account for the accompanying shift in the retinal image. In the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP), neurons update the spatial representations of salient stimuli when the eyes move. In previous experiments, we found that split-brain monkeys were impaired on double-step saccade sequences that required updating acr...

Reversal behavior in split-brain monkeys.

JOHNSON, J. D. AND M. S. GAZZANIGA. Reversal behavior in split-brain monkeys. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 6 (6) 707--709, 1971.Using split-brain monkeys, reversal behavior was observed under two conditions. In the first both hemispheres viewed the discrimination cues. Previous to this one hemisphere had been taught to respond to one cue and the other hemisphere had learned the opposite response. The task w...
